The food was lovely. The main part of the hotel was nice. It only really has a restaurant and bar. There is a separate spa area run by a different company. I had a massage which was nice, but very expensive.

Family-owned Lauraceas Lodge is a wonderful place to stay in the beautiful San Gerardo de Dota area. The team was super friendly and helpful, the locally sourced food and drinks fantastic and the scenery of the area is breathtaking with so many great opportunities to hike through the cloud forest, see beautiful birds and just enjoy the natural beauty. From the Inter-American Highway it’s about a 10km winding way down, but it’s safe enough and,
there aren’t too many tourists, although those in the know are well aware of this paradise. Do visit, and stay here instead of at the Savegre Hotel!

The lodge is very beautiful and owns a private forest. Bungalows are in different places of the forest and very quiet. The lodge organizes many different guided tours to explore and observe the birds in the vicinity and the surrounding. The breakfast is correct and delicious. Elisa was the only friendly staff I met there. She even organized a taxi to go to another region.
Trogon Lodge is located 1.5 km from San Gerardo de Dota town centre and 9 km from Los Quetzales National Park. It features an extensive garden, a terrace and BBQ facilities.

The gardens and birds especially hummingbirds right on the property were incredible to just wander around and explore. The included breakfast was amazing, and the staff were all very welcoming and friendly.

Large ptivate cabine close to nature with large balcony facing the mountain. We saw green toucanets from the balcony while having breakfast!
Comfortable bed with lots of blankets. Hot water available.
Large parking area.
No kitchen but tea and coffee machine in the cabine.
Don't be too late for check-in as road to get there is a steep and it is not easy to drive at night.

This place is a bird-lover's paradise! And it's nice to feel cold sometimes in an otherwise warm, tropical country. Everyone is very nice, and very nature-oriented. The trees are all primary growth and fascinating and beautiful to see. This is one of my favorite places in Costa Rica (so far).

A magical valley, surrounded by an inimaginable amount of flora and fauna. Still a quiet place, with no massive tourism activity yet, greenery is what you will see the most. The Savegre river is astonishing, and its sound is like the perfect match to the landscape. If you are looking for a mountain/forest destination while you are here in Costa Rica, I will recommend San Gerardo de Dota.

The Quetzal valley has its own micro-climate, so its actually a lot colder and less humid than the rest of Costa Rica. You can walk everywhere, it's super safe and the river rushes near the street across some beautiful forest areas, there's no way you don't detox from city vibes in this place. The restaurants Lauraceas and Alma de Arbol are excellent, with super friendly waiters, modern menus and accesible prices. Los Lagos cabins have an awesome mountain view and are near the river, offer an excellent breakfast and are right in the centre of the valley. Bring appropriate clothing -preferably waterproof and with good hiking shoes so you get the most out of your stay regardless of the weather.

Birders paradise.
Birders paradise. This is the best place to see quetzal birds. 1 full day is enough. You must be here for a 5.30am quetzal birding tour if you want to see the quetzals. Cool- about 50° at night, 62-70° during the day.

San Gerardo de Dota has the perfect weather, it's also a very small community. Might need a bit more night life I suppose, but it's not a big deal.
Make sure you bring sunblock and warm clothes for the nights.

The hotel is quite large, with a good restaurant and friendly staff. The location is ideal for bird watching in Los Quetzales National Park. The room in a double bungalow was very clean and well furnished, the balcony overlooking the pond was very nice. To get acclimated there are a few hiking trails that start right at the hotel, the pristine scenery is breathtaking. Not to be underestimated is the cool climate due to the altitude of San Gerardo (over 2000 m), in March at night 8-12 ° C and during the day for hiking very pleasant 15-20 ° C.
The hotel is located in heavily wooded area with a lot of birds and wildlife. My wife wanted to shoot a bird called Quetzal. She had read that this property had a few Quetzals in the woods nearby. They are shy birds so they are very hard to spot. The host did help my wife to find one bird high up in the tree. Earlier that day, my wife went with another guide to spot some Quetzals, so she had a few good pictures. There is a good restaurant within a short driving distance from the property. They serve good meals at reasonable prices.
We enjoyed the setting of the hotel located in the nature. We were able to hike in the surrounding area. The room has great nature photography on the wall. We can look out to mountain views. The bed is firm and comfortable.
The hotel staff are very responsive and provided good on call services, the breakfast was well prepared. We also enjoyed lunch and dinner.
One best things was to see a couple of quetzals near the reception area. We were so happy to see those magical birds up close and personal.
Beautiful location in the cloudforest of Costa Rica; there was a beautiful view onto the mountain landscape from the room
Very good restaurant with a fantastic view
The hotel provided us with ethanol which we could use to light the room which was a very nice touch
The hotel set us up with an extremely skilled birdwatching guide (I would recommend asking for Carlos)
Wonderful hotel grounds with well amrked hiking trails
Beautiful location, staff extremely nice, and great breakfast. We used the guide recommended by the hotel to see the quetzal.... a great moment... Furthermore, we went for the waterfall hike (a little scary but also a great moment for our trip). It's better to have a 4x4 to to come to the place because the village is a the end of a 10% slope for 8 kms (from 3070m altitude to 2300m)
The location is amazing, deep in a valley in San Gerardo de Dota, close to Los Quetzales National Park.
The unit looks like a converted container or trailer and is well equipped and comfortable.
Like others have mentioned, it does get cold at night. This was ok for us, but it was a huge (and welcome) contrast to the searing heat on the Osa Peninsula.
It's a lovely place with nice accommodations, a beautiful area with their own forrest, waterfall and pond on hotel's property. The pond could be seen from our room, and the sound of Savegre river lulled our sleep at night. Consider the temperature is considerably cooler than most of Costa Rica's destinations, so bring your raincoats and jackets.
Great location, mostly worth staying because of the private trails above the hotel. We didn't have dinner, just lunch at the bar, the food wasn't really the best.. breakfast was so-so, and for some reason it was really cold in the restaurant at breakfast. Rooms are good.
The location was very nice, but the road to the hotel needs to be improved.
There are stretches of road that are paved and others that are not. As a result, the driving to and from the lodge is very treacherous. The staff, breakfast and restaurant food were excellent.
All the greenery around, the birds, makes the place really comfy. We felt well welcomed during our stay. The hotel personnel gave us tips to visit Saavegre waterfalls.
The restaurant is superb, quality food, great place to dinner, delicious breakfast.
Casa Monge is charming, we got to see a quetzal and walk along the river. Plus it’s close enough to Savegre Hotel, where we got to see the millennial oak tree in the oak trail. Anthony is really kind and a wonderful host.
Very friendly and helpful owner.
Big and very clean room.
Very nice terrace with a nice view in the forest. A lot of hummingbirds, toucanlets and other birds at the hotel.
Close to different restaurants and cafe's.
We had an amazing 3 night stay at this hotel. Beautiful nature, great hiking trails, perfect breakfast, friendly service, relaxed bar & good wellness offering. Also enjoyed the Quetzal watching tour.
Such a lovely experience in this quiet gem of a hotel. The staff was welcoming and the room clean and comfortable. They provided a delicious breakfast. I would come back in a heartbeat!
This place is a gem, the rooms are modern, big and very comfortable, the place is well located and the restaurant is exceptional. Please, make yourself a favor and choose this hotel!
