Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomEarlier provision of full breakfast.
Car parking was provided on site in what is a notoriously difficult town to park. Breakfast was only Continental as no chef available before 08:00. Not so good if travelling for work purposes.

United KingdomDue to being such an old building it is very noisy, the windows rattle all night and you can hear everything your neighbours are saying, so make sure you take your own ear plugs. If you want to visit local shops don’t visit on Mondays and Tuesdays, most are shut on these days
Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The property itself is so quirky and beautiful

United KingdomVery thin walls (completely understand it’s a very old building) and could hear everything next door were saying/doing/watching. It wouldn’t stop me from staying again though.
Very clean and cosy. Great location and very central.

United KingdomThe only down side on the stay was the breakfast. On first morning we ordered full English, this arrived but was really greasy/oily. Second morning ordered pancakes these arrived burnt and swimming in maple syrup. We did book for Sunday lunch but in the end cancelled as we didn’t want to risk getting inedible meal.
An amazing place so much history and interesting features . A cultural treasure.

IsraelWe obviously did not expect such an old property to function like a modern one. The emphasis in obviously on the charm and the atmosphere of the place. The windows are not double glazed. Practically one can only have a bath as there is no proper shower facility - no curtain. Amenities were good but I missed body lotion. It was a weekend, there were many non-resident guests hence at times the bar was crowded and one could not find a seat for a long while. The lounges served a backups.
The place is charming, in particular the bar and the lounges with the fire places, very quiet. We slept well. All staff was helpful, efficient and friendly. That includes also the bartenders. Location was excellent. Rye is small and everything can be reached within a few minutes walk from the hotel. Breakfasts and Sunday lunch were excellent, with a nice variety. Bar food was excellent too (we had fish and chips). We were there early January. It was cold. We had to add the electric radiator {was in the room} to help the central heating. There were no electricity sockets near the bed but the staff gave us a nice long extension cord with 4 sockets. Overall it is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy drinks and books next to the big fire place.

United KingdomEverything was perfect. Truly nothing to dislike except not being able to stay longer!
All staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Our room was fabulous and our evening meal was wonderful too. We slept well tucked up in our four poster bed and breakfast the next morning was perfect. We have stayed at The Mermaid before and will definitely return again. Thank you all for your hard work!

Absolutely everything. Deliberately booked a small single room and it was very cosy, looking over Mermaid Street. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious. I'd visited the public rooms before but never stayed, so I knew the bar was amazing with the log fire - a perfect way to while away time after a stroll around town!

United KingdomBath very low so struggled to get out of it. Also breakfast was lovely but my friend I went with is only 4ft11 so couldn't see the continental section of meats as it was far too high and way above her eye level.
Staff and hotel both lovely. Rooms comfortable and lovely bar area and rooms to sit in, in front of the fire to have drink and relax.

United Kingdomwe ordered a cheese and chutney Baguette Saturday lunchtime at £9.50 and received a baguette with a slice of cheese and literally a smear of sauce plus 3 pieces of lettuce the size of a 10p coin. We complained and they re-funded the cost. Not impressed with their response.

United KingdomThe shower in our room was only really useful for hobbits as the bath shower head was positioned under the slope of the roof so you had to sit down to shower...fine if you wanted a bath though. Also the fish finger sandwiches we ordered at the bar in the evening were a kind of a bizarre combination of ingredients. Other than that, there was nothing we didn't like.
Really characterful hotel, cosy room and a comfortable bed. Tasty breakfast and helpful staff. Beautiful and convenient location for exploring Rye. The big fire in the bar area is lovely and the ghosts were all very welcoming!
